Google Sponsors Green Flight Challenge

Google gives its all-out support behind the Green Flight Challenge, which is a competition made to motivate the development of energy-efficient personal aircraft. Green Flight Challenge

NASA has included $1.65 million as cash prize. The aircraft must at least reach 100 mph to qualify and have a minimum energy sufficiency of 200 passenger miles per gallon.

The competition is going to be held on September 25 to October 3 at Charles M. Shultz Airport, which is located in Sonoma, California. The Google Green Flight Challenge Exposition will be hosted by NASA and be held at the Moffet Field on October 3.

Competing aircrafts and related technologies will also be displayed. Aircrafts will be held and compete in a closed circuit and be graded on the performance of their flight.

There are a total of 13 teams who are competing for the cash prize and propulsion systems, which include bio-fuel, hybrids and hydrogen. The pure electric is the highest in demand so far and Google is looking for ways to support that.

The search giant managed to build an emission-free charging station for the aircraft by getting its electricity from a geothermal power plant. Erik Lindberg will be presenting the prize for the winning aircraft.
